ISSCO CONFERENCE IN SEOUL, KOREA
An Announcement & Call for Papers
The Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, is pleased to announce that
the 2000 conference of the International Society for the Study of Chinese
Overseas (ISSCO) will be held on June 12-14 at the University. The theme
of the conference is: Chinese Overseas and Asia-Pacific Rim Countries:
Opportunities and Challenges in the New Millennium. The chair of the
conference committee is Prof. Young-Rok Cheong, Chair, Department of Area
Studies, Graduate School of International Studies, Yonsei University.
Co-chairing the conference committee will be Prof. Peter Li, Sociology,
University of Saskachewan, Canada.
CONFERENCE MISSION
The primary purpose of this conference is to critically examine the
political, economic, and social roles of ethnic Chinese communities in the
countries in the Pacific Rim region. In addition, the conference will also
address the dynamics of race relations between ethnic Chinese and their
respective societies in the framework of economic globalization and
political environments of Southeast Asian countries and throughout the
Pacific Rim region. The impact of the overseas Chinese business network on
the Pacific Rim region will also be examined.
Like all ISSCO conferences, the conference committee also welcome original
research papers related to any aspect of the overseas Chinese community in
the rapidly changing world.
CONFERENCE SCHEDULE (Tentative): Other sessions will also be considered

PARTIAL CONFERENCE GRANT
The conference has set aside a small sum for the purpose of
subsidizing up to20 presenters the conference registration fee
and the university accommodation charges, and up to 20
discussants the cost of local meals. These subsidies may be
applied directly to Professor Young-Rok Cheong. Please indicate
in the application your role in the conference, and why a
subsidy is needed. You will be notified in due course.
